Texture, depth, character: the painted backdrop has become the secret weapon of photographers and art directors. Here is why, and how to make the most of it in Paris.
Scrolled through Instagram lately? Fashion campaigns, e-commerce lookbooks and editorial portraits all have one thing in common: the painted backdrop for photo shoots is gradually replacing the classic paper backdrop. It is no accident. Brands want texture, depth, character, and the painted backdrop gives them exactly that. This guide explains everything you need to know about painted backdrops for photo shoots, and how to use them in Paris without blowing your budget.
1. Why the painted backdrop has become a must in photography
The painted backdrop for photo shoots is nothing new, but its popularity has exploded since 2024. The reason is simple: brands are looking to stand out on platforms saturated with images. A white or grey paper backdrop gives a clean but generic result. A painted backdrop, on the other hand, tells a story from the first glance.
The painted backdrop brings three things a paper backdrop cannot offer:
- Texture. Each painted backdrop has a unique surface, with variations in material visible in the image. The light catches the relief and creates depth naturally, without retouching.
- Movement. The brushstrokes, the gradients, the layered coats create a living background that guides the eye toward the subject without distracting from it.
- Uniqueness. Unlike a Colorama that thousands of studios use in the same shade, a painted backdrop is often unique or produced in a very limited run. Your image will look like no other.
In 2025-2026, photographers who integrate painted backdrops into their work see a significant rise in enquiries. Art directors increasingly ask for them in their briefs, whether for fashion, portrait or premium e-commerce.
2. Painted backdrop vs paper backdrop: what is the real difference?
To choose well between a painted backdrop and a paper backdrop for your photo shoot, you need to understand what each brings to the final image. The paper backdrop remains a studio standard for a good reason: it is practical, affordable and gives a uniform result. But it is precisely that uniformity that becomes a problem when you want to stand out.
The paper backdrop is not obsolete, it remains the best choice for pure packshot or cut-out work. But as soon as the image needs to convey an emotion, a brand identity or a premium aesthetic, the painted backdrop for photo shoots takes over.
3. The colours that work best in 2025-2026
Not all colours are equal when it comes to painted backdrops for photo shoots. Current trends favour natural, organic and timeless shades. Here are the four colours art directors ask for most:
Beige / Cream
Beige is THE flagship colour for painted backdrops in 2025. Soft, luminous, warm, it elevates portraits and fashion shoots without ever stealing the show from the subject. It works just as well in natural light as in flash. It is the most versatile painted backdrop, perfect for lifestyle content and lookbooks.
Olive / Sage green
Olive brings an earthy, sophisticated depth to the image. In high demand for shoots of eco-responsible brands, autumn-winter collections and artistic portraits. As a painted backdrop, olive green takes on subtle nuances depending on the lighting, sometimes warm, sometimes cool, which gives rich and complex images.
Brown / Earth
Brown as a painted backdrop evokes authenticity, the raw, the natural. It is ideal for jewellery shoots, natural cosmetics and male portraits. Its tonal variations (from chocolate to caramel) create a particularly effective sense of depth in close-up.
Textured grey
Grey remains a classic, but in a painted version it takes on a whole new dimension. Gone is the flat grey of Colorama paper: a grey painted backdrop offers nuances of concrete, stone, overcast sky. Ideal for corporate shoots that want to break from convention, or for minimalist fashion editorials.
4. For which types of shoot should you use a painted backdrop?
The painted backdrop for photo shoots adapts to many uses. Here are the situations where it makes the biggest difference:
- Fashion and editorial. The painted backdrop instantly gives the image a magazine look. Fashion brand art directors use it for lookbooks, digital campaigns and print editorials. It creates a world without requiring a full set.
- Portrait and personal branding. Entrepreneurs, artists, executives: the painted backdrop brings character to a professional portrait. Far more elegant than a plain background, it enhances the subject without overloading the image.
- Premium e-commerce. For brands that want to stand out on a marketplace, a painted backdrop behind an on-model garment or an accessory gives an upmarket result that justifies a higher price positioning.
- Beauty and cosmetics. The textures of painted backdrops create a visual dialogue with the textures of the products (creams, powders, fabrics). The result is more organic and more elegant than a classic neutral background.
- Social media content. Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn: content shot on a painted backdrop stands out in the feed. It stops the scroll because it has character.
5. How to choose the right painted backdrop colour for your shoot
The choice of your painted backdrop colour depends on three factors: the subject, the light and the emotion you are after.
Start from the subject. A light-coloured garment will stand out better against a dark backdrop (olive, brown). A gold piece of jewellery will come alive against a beige or grey backdrop. A male portrait will gain character against a brown or textured grey backdrop, while a luminous female portrait will be elevated by a cream beige.
Think about the light. A painted backdrop reacts differently depending on whether it is lit by direct flash, diffuse light or natural light. Before the shoot, run quick tests to see how the painted backdrop behaves under your lighting. The nuances change, and that is precisely what makes the magic.
Define the emotion. Beige says "softness and elegance". Olive says "nature and depth". Brown says "authenticity and character". Grey says "modernity and restraint". Align the colour of your painted backdrop with the message the brand wants to convey.
6. Where to find painted backdrops for photo shoots in Paris?
Finding painted backdrops for photo shoots in Paris is not always simple. You have three options:
Buy your own painted backdrops. Specialist brands like Gravity Backdrops or ClotStudio offer high-quality hand-painted canvases. Count on between 200€ and 600€ per canvas depending on the size and complexity. It is an investment if you use them regularly, but it is bulky gear to store and transport.
Rent backdrops by the day. Some providers in Paris offer painted backdrop rental. It is a flexible option, but one that involves logistics: pickup, transport, setup, return. And the choice is often limited.

7. The painted backdrops at Studio Honoré
At Studio Honoré, we have added a collection of handmade painted backdrops to complement our 24 Colorama backdrops. Four shades selected for their versatility and their look in the studio:
- Cream beige. Soft and luminous, perfect for portraits, lifestyle and spring-summer fashion shoots. It brings a natural warmth to the image without dominating the subject.
- Olive. Deep and sophisticated, ideal for editorials, eco-responsible brands and autumn-winter collections. Its nuances vary beautifully depending on the lighting.
- Earth brown. Raw and authentic, it brings character to portraits and to jewellery or cosmetics shoots. A backdrop with temperament.
- Textured grey. Modern and versatile, it suits both corporate and minimalist fashion. Richer and more alive than a classic paper grey.
These painted backdrops are included in all our rental packages, at no extra cost. They are set up on site and ready to use, you have nothing to transport, nothing to assemble. Combined with our flash and continuous lighting, they deliver results you cannot get with a simple paper backdrop.
Good to know: you can switch between painted backdrops and Colorama backdrops during the same session. Start your first series on an olive painted backdrop for an editorial look, then move to a white Colorama for e-commerce packshot, all in the same studio, with no time lost.
8. Technical tips for shooting on a painted backdrop
The painted backdrop for photo shoots is handled a little differently from the paper backdrop. Here are the tips to get the best from it:
- Manage the subject-to-backdrop distance. Move your subject at least 1.5 to 2 metres from the painted backdrop. This creates a slight optical separation and subtly blurs the texture of the background, especially with long focal lengths (85mm, 135mm).
- Light the backdrop separately. A light dedicated to the painted backdrop lets you control the intensity of the texture visible in the image. More light means softened texture, a gentler result. Less light means pronounced texture, a more dramatic result.
- Play with the angles. A painted backdrop is not uniform, that is its strength. Move your framing a few centimetres and the result changes. Use this variation to create several moods with the same backdrop.
- Watch out for reflections. Some painted backdrops have shinier areas than others. A direct flash can create a hot spot. Use modifiers (softbox, umbrella) to diffuse the light and even out the result.
- Minimal retouching. The advantage of the painted backdrop is that it has character straight out of camera. Resist the temptation to smooth out the texture too much in post-production, it is what makes all the difference.
